What Is Reverse Osmosis (RO)?
Reverse osmosis is a natural process that occurs in every cell-based organism. During this process, a solution is placed under pressure and sent through a membrane. This membrane allows smaller particles through while trapping the larger ones (large particles are often contaminants). Once the process is complete, the higher concentrations of contaminants are found on one side and the freshwater is on the other side.
What an RO System Does

The basic functions an RO system performs include:
- Pre- or post-filtration: In addition to the semi-permeable membrane that acts as a filter during the reverse osmosis process, RO systems often contain one or more other filters, including sediment filters and carbon-based filters. Depending on the type of system, water either passes through these filters before or after the reverse osmosis process takes place.
- Reverse osmosis: During the reverse osmosis process, water is sent through a semi-permeable membrane, which removes up to 98% of total dissolved solids.
- Storage: RO systems contain a storage tank that holds all filtered water until it is needed. The reverse osmosis process continues until the storage tank is full and begins again after water is used from the tank.
